Women Who Were Too Much – A New Narrative About Women in Art History
For a long time, the story of women in art has been told as the tale of those who were excluded. However, letters, diaries, and personal papers reveal a more nuanced picture of women who made a living from their art, traveled the world, and built remarkable careers.
In this lecture, author and literary historian Sara Alfort takes you back to the late 19th century, when a group of Scandinavian women traveled across Europe to paint, exhibit, and earn a living from their art. They forged artistic careers and insisted on a life that defied the era's expectations of what a woman could and should be. Drawing on the books 'When the Trees Grew into the Sky', 'Women Who Were Too Much', and 'Women Who Had Enough', Sara Alfort demonstrates why we need a new narrative about the place of female artists in art history.
