Wine & Knowledge: On the Way to Europe – and Into the Community
What happens when people cross borders? And how does migration shape both the journey and the possibility of becoming part of a new society?
This edition of Wine & Knowledge features two researchers focusing on migration from different perspectives. One presentation follows those who disappear en route to Europe and the struggles of their relatives seeking answers. The other explores how participation in community associations and volunteer work can foster belonging, community, and integration. Voices from the Silence: Relatives' Search for the Missing Thousands of people lose their lives each year attempting to migrate to Europe via irregular routes. Many are never found or identified, while others remain nameless even upon reaching Europe's shores. In this talk, Anja Simonsen follows the relatives' search for information about their missing family members and the work of forensic experts trying to provide answers. The presentation offers insight into the human consequences of migration and the challenges arising when the deceased remain unidentified. Immigrants' and Descendants' Participation in Associations and Volunteering – A Path to Integration? Associational life and volunteering play a central role in Danish society. But to what extent do immigrants and their descendants become part of this communal arena? And what significance does their participation have for integration and societal belonging? Hans-Peter Y. Qvist provides insights into research on immigrants' and descendants' involvement in associations and volunteer work. The talk highlights both the potentials and barriers that may affect whether associational life becomes a path to integration.
